If you are in a DCI feeder, can you lottery for the other DCI language paths for 6th? Like if you are in 5th at DCB and worry you won't get a Spanish seat, can you apply for DCI French and Mandarin? If yes and you get in via another track, would they let you take the appropriate Spanish class anyway? |
I think you have to stay in your track to have feeder preference. |
Choose Basis if your kid is academically advanced or Latin if your kid isn’t. If you don’t get into either, move to the burbs. |
You can lottery for other language paths but you can't take appropriate Spanish classes. |
You also don't get feeder priority for your other language path lottery spots. |
Bingo. |
This year DCB's 5th grade class will all get DCI spots. There are more spots than 5th graders. Maybe you are thinking of younger grades? |
Current third graders are the first expanded class. |
Oh interesting - PP here. I see that there are 50 DCI spots guaranteed for DCB and I thought there were currently more than 50 DCB 5th graders. Thanks for clarifying. |
I think other Spanish feeders get to use any spots not used by DCB kids? Not sure, I could be wrong. |
Disagree. If you don't get into a school you want/with a good feeder pattern for 5th, try again for 6th. Then if it doesn't work out, move where you have an inbounds right to attend - whether that's within the Disrict or the suburbs. |
Yes, any unused seats by one feeder school goes to the other feeder schools if they need it. That is why there is no chance at all for a spanish seat if you are not from a feeder. BTW, a few feeder schools have already expanded and DCI anticipates that they will have enough seats for all schools in the fall. |
Yeah, it's next to impossible to lottery into a Deal feeder for 5th. As far as I can tell from DCPS statistics, the only school to offer any lottery spots for 5th over the past six academic years was Shepherd in 2020-21 (pandemic-affected year), which offered three spots. |
You can also lottery for the other language tracks but its without a special preference and its thus not really a backup option. French typically has some no preference spots and Chinese is a reasonably viable lottery choice without a preference. But this does not really help unless you want to switch tracks. |
Even the French and Chinese seats are very competitive if you look at waitlist data. DCI only had 2 french seats and 8 chinese seats last year for non-feeders. More and more feeder kids from all languages are tracking to DCI as the school continues its upward trajectory on getting better every year. |
