A $30k used car with high mileage for a teen?
Are you out of your mind? You could buy a new car for that price. |
| We spent $30k on a 2025 Hyundai Tucson (SUV of the year!) to become the third car for our teen drivers. 5 year/60k mile warranty. We even sprung for the heated seats and it has the Hyundai app included for life. |
I’m 50yo, have never been in an accident, and dislike driving a wide car. Driving a smaller car is much easier to drive imo. |

Whoever said bigger is safer is wrong.
Teens show off. That’s how most accidents involving teen deaths happen. A bigger fancier car might sound safer in theory but the best car for a teen is a basic model “ non showy” car. |
| I would go with car #2. The price isn't that much more for less miles and no accident. |

To be honest. My teen I had similar math and I ended up buying her a basic brand new cheap Chevy.
The 2025 Hyundai Venue at $21,300 and 2025 Chevy Trax at $21,500 is cheaper. And since 2025 all the latest and greatest safety features and you get a full factory warranty. When My teen was looking a five year old Honda or Toyota out of warranty was almost same price as the brand new Chevy. Guess what I bought new when she was a senior in HS, it was totaled 5 years later after she graduated college when a women hit her in a large SUV with all three of my kids in it. All the seat belts locked, all the airbags, upper and lower shot out and car was toast. But all my kids were fine. BTW never spent a Nickle on the car other than oil changes. I took auto shop in HS and my head teacher would say. Yes Japanese Cars are better than American cars. BUT the laws of Physics state that metal rubbing against metal will eventually cause parts to wear and fail. And older higher mileage Japanese vs a new Korean or American car for same price he say go with newer. |
| Why not get teen a used Tesla? They are extremely safe vehicles in an accident. |
No Tesla is not a good car. |
| Check to see if the airbag deployed. If so, pass. |
No, when you are in an accident, you want to be in the biggest care possible. Small car vs. big car is no good for the small car. |
Once accident and it's required to be totaled because they don't know if the battery is safe after that, kind of like a car seat. |
This is not true. Teslas are expensive to repair and there aren't that many places certified to repair severe damage, but it is not correct that they are automatically totaled after a crash. |

Car 2.
