I have a 13yo who is playing select basketball. He also played other sports and wants to focus more on basketball. I don’t know how reliable his sources but two of his friends are on teams and he was told the teams were full. I assume this means that there will not be a try out?

Nova94 had an open gym a few months ago. I wonder if the open gym is the tryout.

Again, I have heard that some of these teams are full and are only seeking superstars or trying to poach really good players. My kid is not that level so I don’t know. Like the OP, I am looking for tryout information and see nothing on their websites. Some websites seem dated, like 5+ years old. Other instagrams have videos of kids playing but no tryout information.

The tryouts for the spring/summer teams will all be in Feb/March time frame. Follow all the orgs you are interested in on instagram.

People are VERY secretive about their kids AAU teams b/c there are so few roster spots and playing time is hard to come by for a lot of kids. They don't want more competition for their kids spot or their kids playing time.

There is an AAU team out there willing to take your kid for a price, you just have to figure out what his correct level is. Don't waste your time at the Team Takeover tryouts if he's on a Division 3 select team, for instance. What select team/level is he on now?

DS is on a Fairfax county B team. He will probably be borderline making his fcps freshman team next year. Hoping he can get on an AAU team so he can play all spring and summer and he has a better shot at his HS team next school year.

Game experience is important, but in terms of development, AAU was a negative for my son as a HS player. He tended to work out at least 2 hours 7 days a week, so he wound up doing stuff like shooting drills on dark courts at the end of AAU tournaments, ball handling in the hallways, or finding a local park and doing workouts between games. He’d travel 4-12 hours in a bus to play at most 20 minutes of 3-5 games in a weekend, so he needed to get shots up and do drills outside of the games.

If your son is on a FCYBL B team, he will 100% make his FCPS freshman team.

That is 100% wrong. Our org had two teams last year for 8th grade boys. Most of the B team players did NOT make the freshman team at two different large FCPS high schools.

My son is now a sophomore but most of the kids from our B team either didn't try out or didn't make the freshman team. Now in 10th grade, none of them are still playing. Some of the A team kids are on JV, one is on Varsity. Our HS usually cuts 20-30 boys from the freshman team tryouts. I don't know what the norm is for FCPS HS. tryouts. Our HS is around 2700 kids.

Yep cutting around 25 from the freshman tryouts was the norm when both my boys played recently. Large FCPS HS.

Unless your kid goes to Woodson, Madison, or maybe one other school, the freshman teams are terrible. There is no possible way that bad rec players are beating out FCYBL kids that are decently coached. Maybe that is your issue...

Who said bad rec players were beating out FCYBL kids? Its unusual for a rec-only player to even make the freshmen teams at the larger high schools I am familiar with. The freshman teams are kids who played AAU and/or various FCYBL teams. Maybe 1-2 rec kids, if they are really tall. Most high schools have multiple FCYBL orgs feeding into their school (e.g., kids from Reston, Herndon, CYA and Vienna teams all dumping into the same HS).

Who else is getting on those teams? Posts before said FCYBL D2 kids weren't making Freshman teams, I don't see how that's possible unless some of the kids were bad kids...CYA feeds into essentially two schools, Westfield and Chantilly. Same with Reston Travel with South Lakes/Herndon, and Vienna with Madison/Marshall. So who is beating out the FCYBL kids to make freshman teams?

An orgs second FCYBL team could be a division 3 team. Those teams are not good.

Nope, not the way it works with so many teams and zip code exceptions. Just the kids I know from my son's freshman team played for 5 different orgs. And I only know half the kids! This winter, CYA has four 8th grade boys teams= which would be at minimum 40 8th grade boys (probably. more like 44) moving up to the freshman team next year. Freshman team at Chantilly has 12 roster spots. Freshman team at Oakton has 12 roster spots. Maybe a few go to Westfield, Centreville HS, or Herndon. And, the best players don't play FCYBL at all. And, they are competing at these high schools with kids from other FCYBL teams, AAU, rec etc. So where are all those 44 boys going to play?

Pp here. I heard 100+ kids tried out for basketball and 15 kids make the freshman team at our large fcps high school. I’m not sure if all 100 kids were freshmen. I know usually 1-2 standout players may play JV instead of the freshman team.

What happens in the older grades is the number of kids trying out drops off dramatically b/c if they got cut as freshmen, they are unlikely to improve enough to make JV as sophomores, etc. So by the time you hit junior year, practically zero kids are trying out who aren't likely to make the team.

We know a kid who got cut freshman and then got cut sophomore year. If you don’t make the team freshman year, it is really unlikely you will make JV sophomore year. I have heard only half the freshman team makes JV.

Anybody have updates on these clubs and anything similar? FOF? VA Elite? Almost time to tryout.

The open gyms are tryouts. All the coaches may not be at the open gym, but the kids are being scouted by someone. Nova94 and the Cavs usually have multiple teams in each age group so it’s not hard to get picked up.

Many kids who are in shape can train hard and make a JV team, even if the got cut as a freshman.
