Alaska before the glaciers are all melted (not international, but far and beautiful - do one week cruise and one week inland renting a car)
Galapogus Islands (hope this stays undeveloped) Europe (so many places to choose from) Costa Rica (we did this for the kids first trip abroad, twins had Spanish in MS, so we felt it was a good plan) Asia (again, much to choose from) |
We have done and would recommend:
Yellowstone/National Parks Japan and/or Thailand London I'd like to do before kids go to college: Switzerland Greece |
Cover 5 continents 1. Asia- Japan or India 2. S America- Peru 3. Antartica ( including a part of South America) 4. Europe- Italy-France-Switzerland trip 5. New Zealand or Tasmania or Gold Coast ( coral reef in Australia) |
Japan
South Africa Mexico City European Christmas Markets |
Paris and London
Croatia and Italy—because this is where our roots are on each side of our family South Africa—including a safari Costa Rica National Parks trip |
1. Get to the Caribbean as often as you can (if your family enjoys sunshine, beaches, seafood, etc.). Puerto Rico is cheap and easy and you don’t need passports. Beach, history, jungle, and national parks.
2. Canada is easy. You can drive there! Montreal and Old Quebec feel very different since they speak French. Old Quebec looks almost European. 3. Combine London and Paris in one trip, but be sure to venture outside the cities to visit coastal villages and the countryside. 4. Italy and Croatia. A long Mediterranean cruise coupled with pre and post cruise land based travel allows you to see a lot. Some Mediterranean itineraries start or end in Italy and Greece so you can start in one and end in another. Honestly, I could vacation in the Mediterranean every summer and be happy—so much to see and it’s all gorgeous. 5. Japan *Try to get your kids to the major places in the US and abroad. That’s what we are doing. |
Italy/europe
Safari trip in Africa Costa Rica or similar jungle beach place Alaska The last I would probably choose somewhere east Asia, but not sure where |
Except Gold Coast is not a coral reef. |
Dang I wish I had more money to take my teens to all these places. |
Wherever your kids want to go, and you’re willing to take them. I’d love to do a safari but my kids are uninterested because of how long it would take to get there. I personally have zero interest in Antarctica, and would be worried about sea sickness, so I’d nix that or something like Galapagos even if they wanted to go. Just sit down as a family and see what you can agree on.
If you can mix it up, I’d do a major capital in Europe like Paris or Rome (not London, it’s wonderful but it’s better if it’s a one time trip for the kids to experience a different language), one area of natural physical beauty like Yellowstone or New Zealand, Alaska before the glaciers melt, and perhaps Tokyo (we haven’t made it there ourselves but it’s on our list!). |
I think the Caribbean is perfectly skipable especially if you live in Florida or on the east or west coast and can have beach vacations that way. It can easily be experienced with a partner in adulthood. |
Nonsense. Went during Trump’s term and during Bush’s. No one cares. |
Our best trips were several out west national and state park loops, part camping and part hotels, to Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, and the CA coast. Then France because I am from there, and Spain. Hoping to fund some further away trips down the road like Japan with grown dcs. |
Germany and England because that’s where my parents are from, so I’d like them to see that (and then add in other stuff.) probably two different trips for us.
Australia-we have family there and I lived there for a year but didn’t get to see as much as I wanted. Or New Zealand-I’ve always wanted to go. Some combo of Peru, Ecuador, and Atacama Desert in Chile. Depending on the political situation. Not sure for a fifth. There are so many places I’d love to take them, plus so many places in the US. And not all of them are practical or in my budget. |
