Talking to your pre-teens/teens about weight

Anonymous

OP, just want to second the statement of a PP that you sound like a really kind and thoughtful mom.

When I put on a little weight as a 10-year-old, my mother laughed at me and called me "chubbums." No, I'm not kidding. Starting around age 11, I have been unable to put any food in my mouth without being painfully aware of exactly how many calories I am consuming (that's 30 years of obsessively counting calories every minute). I was anorexic and bulimic in high school and still struggle with my self-image, although I am a normal weight now.

This is all a way of saying that I would tread carefully (as you clearly already are). I would first try letting the doctor bring it up. Then go from there - but don't let your daughter ever think that you are embarrassed by her or overly concerned about her appearance. She is going to get negative body images from her peers in spades. Keep being the supportive mom that you are - she needs that.
