40% Academic merit aid.

I always wondered this, do they offer academic merit to help get the athlete there or were your child’s stats really high for the school to begin with?

Good question and I don’t know the answer. I have no idea how much merit aid any of my DS’ teammates are getting or what their HS stats were so I can’t compare everyone’s package.

My DS would have been admitted to his school on his own merit and would have gotten merit aid. He was told he was the coach’s #1 recruit that year, which I tend to believe. Did he get more merit aid than another student with the exact same stats? I don’t know.

Merit aid is not a loophole to give D3 athletes athletic scholarships. The amount would be similar with/without athletic status for the same student.

I wish they’d save the money for academic merit students, that’s what college is for.

Gender matters big time with soccer.

It’s good for girls. Boys not at all.

I think every single person with a soccer playing kid already knows this. you comment is also off topic. Move along.

As a parent of a kid recruiting…but not soccer…I didn’t know this and appreciated hearing it.

why does this help you

There are more scholarships for girls in almost every sport.

No duh. As discussed - football dudes get 100% and there are a ton of players on each team. Ergo, the girls get equal $$$ in other sports. It's not that they get more - they are getting equal due to football.

At D3 schools this is exactly what they are doing since they don't give out athletic scholarships. AND at D1 schools there are scholarships for both athletics AND academic merit. And finally, college is for many things, athletics, academics, singing, dancing, clubs...its NOT JUST about academics.

Yes, it is. We know a D3 athlete who graduated with a 2.7 and got significant merit aid. He wouldn’t have even been admitted to the school, let alone received merit, without the sport.

D1
Annual costs for the year are covered at:
75% academic
20% sport
remainder divided between us and kid

This. You don't realize it, but sports at college benefit everyone at the school.

There are plenty of schools that give merit to every admitted student.

Merit can mean many things - perhaps you think it means a GPA of 3.5, the school or major could think its 2.0 or higher. Merit is the absence of need in many situations.

D3 baseball 25% merit aid 25% other scholarships not need based.
