Randomly gifting gift cards to high-end restaurant?

Anonymous
Which restaurants?
I want to give a shout-out to Tosca. My husband was given a gift card for Tosca many years ago, we never used it, it got packed away in some box when we moved, and I just found it recently. I called a restaurant and they said they’d honor it and their cards never expire. I think that’s great!

Where are you all selling your cards too which places are reputable?

Local school auction. Why not just get carryout and find something or gift them to someone else?

I wouldn’t approach people in the parking lot because they are going to think you are running a scam. Go into the restaurant and give them to the host. Ask them to give them out or someone will hear you and you can say “would you like these? We won’t use them.”

Don’t give them to a teacher since it won’t cover their meal either.

What if you did carry out?

no there's not.
I've sold gift cards I wasn't going to use. It's legit.

You can get almost full value for amazon or walmart or target. The odds that a buyer will want a giftcard to an obscure DC restaurant are low

Again where?

DP but I use CardCash.

Read the OP. "the GCs aren’t valid for takeaways,"

What restaurant is this?

We have young kids and can’t dine with them, the GCs aren’t valid for takeaways, and we just have no interest in having a date night at this location because, for one, we don’t like Italian, and would undoubtedly need to add more money to dine here. All this to say, how weird would it be to randomly present these to someone in the parking lot and tell them (part of) dinner is on us!

Portrait of a non-gracious person.

(And a creepy one - giving them away in the parking lot? lol!)

I don't understand. Why can't you go to the restaurant, order a few drinks and apps & be done? Sounds like a fun night out.

This is what Buy Nothing is for! You put that $100 into the universe and maybe you get it back in ski pants or swim fins in a size your kid needs.

I agree that $50 to a $45+ entree restaurant is annoying. If our bill will be $250 and a babysitter is going to run me $60-100, it’s not a gift, it’s a cost I didn’t choose.

I think it is a great idea. My daughter got a $25+ gift card from some customers while she was in line at Carmen’s. She was thrilled.

I think you can give them away in the parking lot, and someone will be happy to have it.

I did this recently twice, although for much less value, and both well received. In Target, I got a covid shot before traveling, and they give you 5% off anything you were buying. I wasn't buying anything, and walked over to someone checking out with clearly a lot of Christmas toys, and I gave them the coupon - they were estatic. The second time, I had a gc to a place I don't frequently shop at (Neiman Marcus) and went in trying to use it. I bought something that left a little over $10 on the gc, and did not want to even try just spending that at any point. I gave it to the person behind me, who was also happy to receive it.

I would not find it creepy at all, and would very much appreciate it,
Just keep it short “I have this gift card we’re not using.”
Weird that other people would find this weird.
