Why did they get angry?

Different poster from the one you quoted here.
They only notified some people, and others were left hanging and wondering if the fact they weren't notified meant they were rejected. It was just a few days before Christmas and really just seemed mean. My kid was a high school senior last year but had not applied to VT, so while it didn't affect my kid, I sure heard a lot about it from others.

I don't get this - don't lots of schools release decisions in batches? I know University of Delaware, Pitt, a few others. No one thinks that's mean.

Exactly. There are some posters on this forum who take everything intensely personally when things don't quite go the way they prefer.

Like I said, my kid didn’t even apply so it was nothing personal for me. I just thought it was kind of mean to change it up a few days before Christmas without warning.

As other posters have said, there was nothing mean about it. They released them as they finished them. They don't have to do everything exactly the same, every year.

No, it was strange and unexpected. They aren’t a rolling school.

Just validating those kids and families. You move on if it didn’t impact you. Our student found out in October because they were part of a summer program. But it was odd how they handled notifications, no denying it.

My kid was accepted in that early batch just before Christmas last year and was elated. Those who say it wasn’t fair bc it wasn’t announced - even if you had a point last year about fairness, you no longer have that point. You have been warned that VT may manage its workload by sending out acceptances in batches. So it should be approached like the other schools that do the same. Also, VT accepted a number students well into May last year at our large public high school (including some that were a high reach for VT, and I don’t know enough about their applications to know if they were deferred or waitlisted prior to that). So you should also be prepared to wait to the end of the application season, but that doesn’t mean you won’t still get good news.

The reason people got mad is that there is a distinct advantage to getting accepted early - housing is selected in the order students sign the housing contract, and early acceptances = opportunity to sign housing contract early = best selection of housing.

My DC was part of that application cycle, so it did "impact" us - but we didn't whine and moan about the inhumanity of it all. We took VT's messaging to heart - that they were simply releasing some decisions as they went along and that it had nothing to do with selectivity, preference, or anything else. No need to "validate" anyone. As another poster said, they are allowed to release when they see fit.
