Can you get full DC TAG *and* a scholarship at a public university?

So tuition for your kid was $0 after merit scholarship and TAG?

Amen!

FWIW, my experience with the DCTag people were that they were super-responsive.

DCTag benefits wealthy families. It would make much more sense for feds to increase need based aid for DC families to state schools.

In state tuition also benefits wealthy families as well as families with more need. Programs that serve citizens across the board tend to retain funding longer.

Yeah, good luck with that.

The problem is that in other states, only affluent families pay the in state tuition rates, as there is usually need based financial aid for families who need it. But often that money isn't available for students out of state. DCTag brings the tuition to an affordable level for families who can afford in state tuition, but it doesn't make college accessible to low income kids.

If congress were to expand the $ for DCTAG, it would make more sense to limit to state schools within a certain area, like say in states within 100 miles of the border, so MD, VA, PA, DE, WVA, NJ, but to offer instate tuition, or to meet full need, whichever number is lower, and also to work on creating guaranteed transfer options for UDC Associates degree holders within that region. That would give all DC residents more options than people who live in most states have, rather than helping the wealthiest kids go to UCLA or Michigan while low income kids still don't have choices.

The wealthiest families in DC already are not eligible for TAG. The program has an income limit.

The very wealthiest, but there are plenty of wealthy people with income under the cap.

Benefitting wealthy parents so they don’t flee to Maryland and Virginia for in state tuition for their kids’ safety schools (not that UVA or UMD are actual safeties, this is just the rich people mindset) is a feature for DC, not a bug.

Just no incentive for any lawmakers from any other state to ever vote for this — it’s too easy to cast it as a special sop to us horrible Washington swamp creatures, and what’s the benefit to the states?

I don’t disagree. It’s one of those things that seems so elegant - I had imagined it possibly as a way to defund TAG if Congress wanted to choose a policy fix that lets them spend less money.

My kids both qualified for TAG and one has a scholarship too - didn't matter. What did matter was income - we barely qualify - and probably won't next year as our income is rather cyclical.

what is the income limit?
