21 month old not saying proper words yet

Yes, call EI and for a speech evaluation and also do a hearing assessment.

The Speech Language Pathologist can figure out if it’s both recessive (understanding) and expressive or not.

When he does baby mumbling, are you hearing variegated babbling with different sounds like “bababoo” or is it something else? I might keep an ear out for what you’re hearing to discuss with the SLP.

My kid only had 3 words at age 2. She started talking up a storm right after her second birthday. I didn't get an evaluation, but it never hurts.

SLP here. Trust yourself. You are worried and that's why you're posting here. Please have your child evaluated by a speech and language pathologist. We typically expect about 50 words at your childs age.

He used to say mama but stopped a few months ago. He is very responsive though and plays with us as well as with his toys. But I notice other babies similar to DS’ age and they say more and clearer words.

Should I be worried about this?

I think more than the language issue is the regression. I would definitely get him checked out.

+1 to the regression, my first thought as well

Start with a ped appt asap

It may not be a regression. It was a single word that wasn’t followed by other similar words. It’s possible, maybe more probable, that the child hasn’t moved into that stage of speech development yet.

This. A good speech eval includes a hearing test.

I was there a few years ago, and I also vote to get your kid evaluated asap. Maybe it's nothing, but you will be glad you did it. (mine ended up not talking until almost 4, followed by years of speech therapy).

Another vote for speech therapy asap. My niece was not speaking at 18 months and 4 months of therapy caught her up. My sibling was weird about doing it and I convinced him by saying- you want your kid to have every advantage possible right?

Your pediatrician should have flagged this. My child didn’t have any words at the 15-month appointment. The ped said to watch and call early intervention if there wasn’t significant improvement by 18 months. Sometimes these things will sort themselves out and other times it can help to have speech therapy. EI is free or low cost in most places so it can’t hurt to get an opinion.

Alot of primaries are lazy and don't want to flag something because then they have the arduous burden of having to get referrals in line
