what's the best public elementary in DC?

It looks like the white kids at Watkins do very well.

At Eaton, 60 percent of the white kids score 'Above Average.'

Then compare apples to apples WRT your type of kid.

That, to me, is more persuasive than the umbrella "what is the best school" answer.

People might be interested to know, for example, that the percentage of white kids scoring 'Advanced' in reading is much, much, much higher at Eaton than at Key. To me personally, this says there's a whole lotta test prep going on at Eaton, because I do not believe that the white daughters of public interest lawyers and journalists living in Cleveland Park are 40% smarter than the white daughters of public interested lawyers and journalists living the Palisades.

Since when can public interest lawyers and journalists afford Cleveland Park or Palisades?

Such an analysis across all types would be interesting. Like, where does the Free and Reduced Meals crowd do best? the English Language Learners? And yes, the whites, blacks, and hispanics.

But ditto -- how could public interest lawyers and journalists afford Cleveland Park or Palisades??

Although I see that white kids' test scores seem to be the great foundation to finding a great school, look at the overall philosophy of the school. My kids are african american and attend Cap city. While the scores of aa kids are not as high, the reality is that my kids did really well on the tests. There should really be an economic breakdown of the scores instead of a racial breakdown. Your kids will do great no matter where they attend school if they come from a well educated family. I love cap city and did not look at test scores when I chose it. It was the right school for our kids and my kids absolutely love it. I have 2 boys and cannot wait to get to school.

Public interest lawyers and journalists can afford Cleveland Park and/or the Palisades and other nice neighborhoods because they bought their homes a long time ago (we bought our lovely house in upper NW 14 years ago; could never afford it now), or they moved up from a starter home that rose in value; or they have family money. Pretty common scenarios, all of them.

Sometimes, I wonder if the expectation that AA kids will score poorly on tests and the results are mutually inclusive.

Anyway, I'd say Yu Ying. If the biliteracy goal is attained no other school in DC comes close.

I would disagree. E.W. Stokes, which has both French and Spanish immersion, has a longer, proven track record than Yu Ying, but their classrooms are amazingly small.

Um, Chinese trumps Spanish/French. Sorry.

Stop, all of you. What foolish sniping. None of you have to fight for students. You may think you're representing or defending your schools, but you're over the line. Act like the great families that compose your schools.

After attending Back to School night, it's my considered and impartial opinion that MAURY E.S. is the best public elementary in the city! GO COUGARS!!!

Seriously though, PP, what's your criteria?

I wasn't sniping. I stated EW Stokes has a proven track record, irregardless of language taught, and YY has been here less than 5 years. If you don't understand the comment, don't jump to conclusions. Jerk.

Eaton Mom here, PP, to let you know that there is no more test prep at Eaton than any other "Top" school in DC - but the key is an exceptional reading specialist who guides each grade level's reading and assesses kids, as well as a terrific academic environment, very involved stellar principa, great teachersl and an acadamic approach that deploys the best thinking on te
aching these days - Responsive Classroom, Writer's (or is is Writers - don't know if it is meant to be possessive or plural!) Workshop, etc. Throw in Eaton's World Cultures School designation, autonomous status, enrichment coordinator and a very involved parent community, of course the students are set up to succeed - and not by excessive test prep!

You are doing an informative job of representing Stokes and the sort of families it attracts. Thank you for the (unintentional) insight.

Sorry, how exactly would a World Cultures School designation (what does that mean besides an hour or so of Chinese every week) have an effect on reading scores for the DC-CAS?

Huh? You're making ASSumptions. My kid doesn't attend YY (though I do know families there), its just my opinion that it's the best ES in DC. Stokes is still awesome, two posters disagree about which is #1. Geesh.
