How do you pick up and move to a new city and state?

Do you have enough money to pay for the move, security deposit and a few months rent, and your necessities until you find a job? And do you have a skill set that is needed in the new location? If so you just rent an apartment, pack your stuff, and go. If you don't have a nest egg it's harder and you need to find a job there first (and save up while you wait--moving is expensive, even if you get rid of lots of stuff and rent a U-Haul you still need boxes, the truck, and replacement stuff). And if you have kids or other dependents or a spouse who also needs to find a new job, it's even more complicated.

I did the digital nomad thing.

I’ve never been a planner - I just go do something and figure it out as I go. So there have been times I decide to move and three days later I’ve moved.

The biggest thing is to be as minimalist as possible. I can fit everything I own into a fairly small UHaul, and I can disassemble, pack up, and reassemble everything I own by myself.

There’s tons of work that can be done from anywhere. I love freelance work. If you want a regular job, don’t just apply and wait. It helps to actually be in that area and go knock on doors.

I’ve always found that just doing it forces me to figure out a way to make it happen, rather than planning for months and never actually doing it.

I did this in my mid-20s. I was miserable in my warmer location. I saved enough money to live off of for a few months, quit my job, sold all my stuff that didn’t fit in my car, and left. I sub-leased a fully furnished apartment for 3 months (doing this in dc is pretty easy, but might not be elsewhere). I knew I had the ability to do temp work if I needed to, and I did.

Sounds like some therapy might be in order.
Step one - go visit
Get a job there.
