Diwali school celebration

I have one kid who does NOT want me at school or field trips ever. That's fine with me! So it could be just that, but it's you do want to make sure you unpack any racism he's experiencing.

I think this is the way to go. Also note it may not be racism from the kids, but if he is a minority on the school sometimes it's just not wanting to be different. Which I get. I was usually the only other brown kid ( other than my sister) when I was in school.

It sucks that Diwali has coincided with Halloween the past two years. It has really ruined it for my family.

But also, in Fairfax County where I live, there is a lot of racism against Indians. So that may be why your child is so hesitant.

You could send in a craft project if the teacher is ok with it and provide a bunch of diyas for the kids to paint, plus little battery-operated tea lights to put in them. Send a short storybook for the teacher to read.

If he’s not into it, then listen to him and skip it this year.

I did this for my child's preschool class. I do not think it would fly in 2nd/3rd grade.

I'd pull my child out of that school. unacceptable.

Religious celebrations must never be allowed in any school.

None!

It probably has more to do that you would be speaking op. That’s something parents do in preschool and kindergarten. Volunteering for a class party is very different! Respect his wishes. I personally think religious holidays have no place in schools and that includes Christmas. They do winter parties now instead of Christmas. Your kid doesn’t want to be seen as different. We are a Muslim family and my kid would probably be embarrassed if we came to speak about Eid at his school. He’s 8. He did speak about a trip abroad recently and he really liked sharing pictures with his classmates. His teacher assigned him a project to share cultural information with the class.

Not a school I would send my dc to.

I doubt this is true! At least the have each other to spend time with! An outcast is someone without friends. It could be because their parents don’t tend to sign them up for team sports. There are a lot of recent Indian immigrants who live in my community and none of them do team sports. A few do karate. It’s not something they seem to prioritize and I think for a boy is can be a huge disadvantage. There are wealthier Indians who do travel sports. My community is a townhouse community but you need to be upper middle to live here.

We have a thriving Indian-American community in Montgomery Country where I live.

My kids have no problem in celebrating Diwali because a lot of their close school friends are also Indian-American.

In any case, Happy Dhanteras, people! It is the first day of Diwali (5 day festival).

Yes, we face covert racism in team sports. So, most of the Indians will end up playing individual sports like golf, badminton, karate, tennis, track, and swimming. Also, they also have their own cricket league.

As for wealthier Indians - just remember that all of them are wealthier than you, even if they live in a TH community.

I’m guessing they will never in a million years celebrate anything to do with Christianity.

Judaism, Hinduism great so wonderful let’s have a special day of learning and celebrating. But nobody will ever be able to say a positive word about Christianity.

You guess wrong. And your persecution complex is exhausting.

As opposed to the pluralistic country of India?

Asians are typecast and stereotyped by other racial groups. You can say the same of AA and Hispanic culture but it's a bit nuanced. If you're not Asian, you probably wouldn't understand. Just as an example, AAPI month is barely mentioned much less celebrated at most schools while many (even primarily white) schools will go out of their way to promote every other ethnic group's "month."

At least we have democracy in India. No loser cries and whines that "election was stolen". No leader has been convicted of raping women. No leader has kids with 3 women and has affair with a porn star.
