My kid was a bit thinner too--but bulked up as well. He is eating even healthier than at home--lots of choices in dining hall. Playing a club sport and also for a team outside of the school. Works out a lot with friends at the school gym.

He looked very healthy and happy when we visited 2 weeks ago. No illnesses--or even allergies...he needed seasonal allergy shots here.

Biggest surprise? THE WEATHER. He's 7 hours north- but the weather was so much nicer than DC this Fall. They didn't get any of that long stretch of rain like we did. The weather has stayed low 70s/upper 60s..and it's tracking about the same as DC this week---going to be mid-upper 70s on Halloween too. I thought it would be much cooler/colder than here which wouldn't have been a problem because he's not a fan of high heat/humidity.

Of course, every college is not going to be exactly as promised or represented by tour guides or admissions. There will be that day when your freshman realizes this, and has to accept the next few years.

yeah, we were nervous about the weather, too, sending my kid to MA. And I keep finding it about the same or even WARMER than here.

We'll see if it works out for winter.

+1 but my kid is hoping to see some snow (Rhode Island). We never get it in DC anymore.

I think the weight loss might be all the walking. Both of our college kids lost weight in their freshman years. It balanced out a little later but I was kind of worried.
