Open house observing class

For those that observed classes yesterday, how did it go? Satisfied, disappointed? Why?

I did NOT attend either my kids high school or middle school.
My HS kid said there was only one parent in all of their classes. Our HS allowed parents to follow their child to each of their classes.
My MS kid said they saw no parents in their classes. Our MS had a structured set up with coffee with principal and visiting random children’s English and math classes, for some reason we were not allowed to just follow our kids class schedules.

Maybe because this is a giant nuisance for teachers?

Our ES open house was such a show. Parents were yelling at kids, not even their kids, telling them how to do math problems. As if that would help .

Not really. I was volunteering for the PTSA at DC's school and the kids I knew who stopped by told me there were usually 3-4 parents in each class. Many of the parents who came seemed to have a good relationship with their children and the kids seemed happy to have them there.

I did not attend DD's classes though as I was just doing a shift at the PTSA table. She didn't really care that I came either way.

I went last year to HS open house. There were maybe 25 parents of freshman who showed up. It was uncomfortable for the kids so I left.

It really depends on where you live. This was pre-pandemic but in DC's HS it was really crowded. Young DC went to a different school and told us hardly anyone came.

I thought it was kind of fun. I find HS classes interesting and it was nice to put a face and style to the teachers my kid would talk about. Like one of the teachers was kind of woo-woo crunchy granola, so the stories my kid was telling made more sense in context. It’s just a nice little window into their life, especially if you coukdnt attend back to school night. I would say about a quarter of the kids had a parent there the year I went (which was 2 years ago, I think).
