I am thinking it's some kind of purgatory with a evil twist on it. Witches? Demons? Wendigos? Whatever entity that's keeping them trap there is controlling them is using the monsters who used to be townspeople that were trapped there. It's happened to too many problems from different decades so I am positive that area with the tree has some magical/time shift property. So not exactly like Lost
