Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
That isn’t how free speech works. The kids are allowed to protest. How dare you call for punishment? Are you deranged? |
| If they want to walk out to support a cause they should be prepared to suffer the consequences-unexcused absence. Zeros, etc. |
They can protest on their own time. They should not be allowed to disrupt other students education. Getting up and leaving during the school day should have the same consequences as cutting class. Its the same thing. |
LOL, you have no idea what you are talking about. |
You need to share your views with the school board and superintendent and get others to as well so you change the regulations. I have, but one person is not enough. You can find the pdf for the current regulations if you google "FCPS regulations protest." They do it during a study hall. Times have changed since those regulations were created as we see at colleges like Columbia and countless others. FCPS needs to adapt. They could give an excused absence for one or 2 off campus protests a year. There's plenty going on in DC they can join. Our schools need to be safe havens where learning is not disrupted unless you chose to take that excused absence. |
If some kids want to use a 30-minute study hall break to step outside and protest against the violence being perpetrated against Palestinians and Lebanese, then let them. At least they have a concern for the larger world. Every one of these threads sounds like it’s written by some fascist who wants to burn a family’s house down in East Jerusalem or Hebron because a 13-year-old Palestinian kid threw a rock at an Israeli soldier. |
Its skipping class and should be treated as such. If they care so deeply about what they are protesting, then they need to accept the consequences of their actions. Nothing is stopping them from getting up at 6 am and protesting outside before school starts, or after the school day is over. |
| Why are they allowed to do this during the school day? There is lots of time to protest on their own free time. They don't need to interrupt my child's education or make more work and hassle for the staff because they are Tik Tok zombies. |
| Incredibly poor judgment for the school to allow such protests the same week as the memorials for the terrorist attack on October 7. Really, what is going on over there at Mclean. |
It wouldn’t matter to you. You would object to any demonstrations of student support for Palestinians or Lebanese under siege. Good for McLean to let the students exercise their First Amendment rights and good for the students to choose a day other than October 7th to do so here. |
Nonsense. They can protest any silliness they want, on their own time. If they want to skip class for any reason, they should suffer the normal consequences. |
Or, offer a pop-quiz for the kids that did show, with questions like: Name Date Little bump for the kids that actually give a sh@t |
| Admins are stuck because of FCpS policy.. The same thing has happened at many high schools since the policy was implemented. It is no use containing administration unless you want to be reassured security is present and school is safe. Their hands are tied as long as it is peaceful. Go to supe and school board to state concerns. |
You don’t get a grade for a 30-minute study hall. |
| State law allows one protest day. |
