| It is a nickname |
| It's both, signed Shelly who has it as a stand alone name. |
And Dawn. And Amber. Crystal. Ashlee, Britney, Kynadee |
| It can be either. I know a few Michelles and only one goes by Shelley (another sometimes goes by Shelby). But I do think it can be a name on its own or a nickname for other names. |
| It had a moment as a name on it's own in the 70s. |

This is my name!
(I am not the OP.) The name ‘Shelley’ is from the boy side of the baby book but my mother liked the name and gave it to me (I am a female). I have met only 1 other same-spelling Shelley in my life. I am mid 40’s. |
| It is a shit name |

I was born in ‘73. My parents had friends we used to share a Dewey beach house with and the wife was named Shelley, which, when I was a young kid and we were at the beach, I thought had something to do with “shells” and therefore was kind of a strange, airy-hippie name.
About 30 years later my sister-in-law in Iowa had a bff named Shelley. I thought that was an out-of-generation name since I associated it with my parents’ friends. Trying to think of something positive. . .maybe my children’s generation can resurrect this name for their children? Because they have no negative associations with it. I think it is too soon, imho. |
