How hard is it to get a zip code exception?

No, a 7th grade D1 team. I guess zip code exceptions are not necessary if BRYC board members also serve on FCYBL so they won’t enforce rule violations on themselves.

For some reason BRYC has an absurd number of zip codes, which doesn't make a lot of sense because their rec basketball program is small.

So you got 11 zip codes plus 2 exceptions per team (and some savvy coaches get 3 exceptions), plus apparently cheating...its amazing bryc teams don't win every division.

Seriously - 11 zip codes?? Don't most teams in FCYBL have like 3 or 4 max? That's ridiculous - what reasoning is that? South County has 3. Ft. Hunt has 5. Why does Braddock Rd get SO many??

But it seems like FCBYL might be putting too much faith in coaches to follow the rules. We've seen firsthand at the D2 level this year that not all coaches are sticking to them.

This has been problem for years in FCYBL. They refuse to do the most minor of enforcement of zip codes. They take the lazy route of "trusting" clubs/coaches to do right thing. And then - sure enough - every year there are multiple/many examples of coaches that pay no attention and try to "Hayfield" a team together...

Require proof of residence to FCYBL directly. Invest the time to review/question as needed. And have a fairer league.

To help ensure everyone is playing by the rules, FCBYL can have parents and/or coaches submit proof of residence to FCBYL. The FCBYL board can then do a few random spot checks, which should only take about an hour of someone's time.

We've also noticed some 7th graders playing in the D2 6th grade division. This can take away the fun for everyone involved. Let's keep the games fair and enjoyable by making sure players compete in their correct age groups.

I heard last year that the top guy of FCYBL is also a BRYC guy, so BRYC gets some special privileges (such as having the largest coverage area).

Wait until you hear about Arlington

If you see ineligible players on a team (eg 7th graders playing on a 6th grade team), you need to email the league. They don't know coaches are cheating if you don't tell them.

Some of these coaches come from the shady world of AAU where literally anything goes.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen at least 2 players on 2 different teams in the same grade and division. I need to confirm and I plan to report it.

Last year parents from our son’s team also noticed many zip code exceptions on a team (BRYC I think) and reported this to our commissioner but they said he just shrugged his shoulders and didn’t do anything. The parents knew many of the kids and parents from a prior AAU team.

Well how else are they going to compete with McLean?

No it doesn’t make it fair. They should make the teams based on which high school the kids address is zoned in.

There's a whole FCYBL board - need to email/report to the entire board. Much harder for them to ignore and/or shrug shoulders if multiple people are made aware. Reputation of that league (which used to be sterling few years ago) has really deteriorated because they won't take simple actions to curb blatant cheating.

How is that any more fair? Some high schools are massive and some are small

Thats why fcybl has different divisions. But in Fairfax county, allll the public high schools are large.

You need to report that. One year there was a kid playing on two different teams and they kicked him off both.

Is McLean particularly problematic? Boys or girls?
