Warm but not tropical

Head to the southern hemisphere? Ecuador, Peru? Not sure that will meet your criteria of <8 hour flight, though.

14-15 hours flight time because you have to go to Europe and then transfer.

Sounds like you want the desert. Texas? Santa Fe?

No there are direct flights from Newark - less than eight hours actually.

I don't see any nonstops from Newark to Gran Canaria in Google Flights, and the airport Wikipedia Page doesn't list Newark as a destination (and that is generally very accurate in my experience). Maybe there was a flight in the past, but it was dropped during covid?

Sedona is cold at spring break. It snowed last year.

Daily highs in San Diego are 65 in January. Sedona is 56.

Some of you are really bad at this.
or a different definition of warm

+1

San Diego ranges from 50s at night to upper 60s during the day
Palm Springs ranges from 40s at night to 70s during the day

That seems "warm" to me.

From OP:

"Kids have loved ocean / tide pool vacations in the past"

To me, that meant someplace where it would be warm enough to swim in the ocean/sea. This is what confused me, as places that warm in January are pretty much all tropical, by my definition.

Sure, but if OP is thinking that the Canary Islands sound good, then San Diego would fit the bill too. (And a much easier flight.) Regardless of where you choose to go, have a great time, OP!

Hawaii?

I think of tropical as steamy and humid.

Cartagena, Madeira? Coastal Ecuador? Although Ecuador has lots of great stuff to see further inland, like mountains, cloud forests, and the Amazon.

Yes you are right on Gran Canaria, but there are nonstop flights to Tenerife! For now, at least - thru April 2025 only.

Ah good find, for some reason didn't include that in the search, even though the two islands/airports are about equally popular/busy.

South america? Chile or argentina; warm during that time but not particularly tropical.

You have to go to the Southern Hemisphere (where it's summer in January), further south than the Tropic of Cancer. You aren't going to find this with less than an 8 hour flight. Think Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
