I would choose Montreal.

Your mileage and budget may vary, but I'd probably pick Minneapolis or Milwaukee if I hadn't already been to both. My reasoning is I like cities and leaves are probably gone most places by late October anyway.

If driving, Philly, Brandywine Valley + Delaware, Richmond, Roanoke, Staunton, but this depends so heavily on what you like, why you're going, and what other places you've been recently or ever.

Wow, these are all horrible suggestions. Milwaukee? Minneapolis anytime outside of summer?

I’m doing a hiking/wine tasting trip that weekend, but sounds like that’s not your cup of tea. I’d consider Charleston. Good luck!

I think you should go to Lisbon! Direct flight, great city to walk around, good food, enough to do for a few days and if you pick a nice hotel, can spend time relaxing by the pool there too.

She asked where I would go, and that's where I would go.... I actually went to both Minneapolis and Milwaukee in January (years ago).

My goals:

Stay someplace nice…with a comfy bed.

Walkable or easy to get a cab/uber if I fly.

Good food.

Something to do during the day. Could be the beach, or could be sightseeing. I’m an urban hiker who enjoys 30k steps in a city or bustling town, but I have zero interest in hiking in the woods.

I have a passport and I’m fine with a long flight even for a short trip as long as it’s nonstop.

I’m truly curious what others would do: where would you go, where would you stay, where would you eat, and how would you spend a fabulous few days?

I would go to San Antonio, San Diego, New York, or Chicago. Or lodge at woodloch for a not urban experience

I’ve been to San Antonio a few times to visit relatives but there’s not much there. There’s the Alamo and riverwalk, which just seems like an open sewer. Not much else.

I have also been several times. I enjoyed biking on the missions trail, taking a dinner boat on the Riverwalk (which isn't a sewer), some art museums and gardens, good restaurants, day spa, etc. I could easily fill a few days there!

My parents live in Savannah. Portions are underwater and they said they were shocked by how much of the city is without power. They said trees are down everywhere. I wonder how recovered it will be in a month?

Years ago I went to the Eastern shore for the last weekend in October (my birthday weekend) and it was beautiful weather and so quiet and peaceful. If you flew somewhere like Albany it would also be a great time for foliage probably (could be a little on the late side).

Agree on San Antonio. It struck me as pretty boring.

And the food is terrible! Nothing but burritos, beans and rice.
