| Isn’t there a greater benefit to applying from in-state to a state school? Applying from Utah is more likely to be a bonus for private schools, but many state schools give the bump to in- state applicants? Also, what is the rigor of her school compared to high schools in the area you would move to? |

I would not move from Utah to VA for the reasons you listed. Especially not because your kid thinks VA state schools may be a possibility. A year ago my then tenth grader was 100% positive he wanted to go to school in a certain state where we have a lot of family and spend a lot of time. A year later, in 11th grade, he’s done a 180 on that and also possible majors. DH and I don’t think we will settle down in northern VA long term once the kids grow up but we are not making any moving decisions based upon their fickle minds in their teen years.
Both of my teens always have definite solid plans for their futures. That change every few months. |
Similarly, when she was a sophomore, my DD was absolutely intent on studying in the UK. She is now a senior and does not have a single UK school on her college list. If you have other reasons for moving, that's one thing. But if the reason pushing you to do it now is where she wants to go to college, I would hold off for now. |
