Recommend that your child go to the college writing center.

If this is for an college application, put the essay aside for at least 1 full day.
Pick it up and read it fresh.
Ask - what do I want the reader to know from this paragraph? Are all paragraphs necessary? What points are weaker and can be eliminated?
