ADHD/ADD in Girls

Anonymous
Sounds like me as a kid and adult. And for me, it was also procrastination (side effect of the perfectionism), slower to get things done and trouble with multi tasking. I was quiet, smart and got good enough grades. I most likely wasn't working to my full potential. I do ok now as an adult but there was definitely a struggle to get to this point. I had no idea I could be ADHD/ADD until a friend who has it pointed it out to me and it all makes sense now. I have never been formally diagnosed but am thinking about getting it done.

MY DD has/had all of those symptoms. We decided to medicate her when we realized that her impulsivity was causing her to lose friends - which then caused her to spiral into anxiety and depression. To this day (she's now 20) she still takes meds, in part, to keep her from blurting out every thought that comes to her mind or acting on every impulse.

DD has ADHD-Inattentive which was diagnosed at 14. Her dr. said it can be very hard to separate out anxiety vs. ADHD in girls. He felt the ADHD was most likely since DH and DS also have it. The recommendation was to focus on treating the ADHD and if that relieved the anxiety we were on the right track. Medication definitely helped although it took a while to find the right one/right dose.

Despite the family ADHD history, the inattentive type was quite different and really didn't see it until HS when it finally swamped her inability to cope.
