By lack of support do you mean that she was one person teaching that many kids while the former department chair never got a second band person to take done of her teaching load? She was amazing. She did after school clubs twice a week, the band sounded fantastic, never better. Support would have been more people in the band department, especially if she had health issues.

You seem to be upset - not sure if you have some personal issue with all of this. Are you at Maret? They brought a fabulous man in last year who was beginning to take on some of her duties this year, including some of the Middle School band classes (and Upper School). I think you are out of line and misguided.

And they had another music teacher who came in part-time to assist with the larger classes before that. I don't understand why these posters are using the personal decision of a teacher who needs to take time for herself, as an opportunity to bash others. It's just in poor taste. Including the original poster who obviously has an axe to grind.

Nobody seems to be blaming this band teacher. She sounds awesome. The original post was about a lack of leadership. Firing a department chair and not having direction. That alum seems upset with the administration

also, covid did a number on a lot of kids where activities in general, including performing arts, is concerned.

This. They seem to be focusing on sports for better or worse

My kid's school the band plays at homecoming. Do they do that at Maret?

I think the concern is that the band teacher will not be replaced with someone of equal quality given the lack of managerial skills of the music department in the last few years

Definitely not a Maret teacher, but I am a musical director at a neighboring school. I value myself too much to overwork myself at Maret. Those faculty are given a bar that is too high, and too few resources to achieve what's expected of them. That's why 25% of the faculty left post pandemic. So no, I'm not a Maret teacher and happy to say so.

I think Maret is in a transitional period right now with the new Head, but it seems like they are listening to feedback and taking steps to make positive changes. These things take time.

lol sure. You just go out of your way to post negative things about a school you know nothing about?

According to the job posting they are just looking for a short term sub for band for for 2-3 weeks with pay of $900-$1,200/week

Job posting also says “enjoys working with large groups”. Any music teacher knows how to read between those lines

She was a great teacher but my kid dropped Band because of how many times she was absent in the past. For stretches of time each year my child would end up learning from classmates who had to take over during her times away. I hope she gets better and I'm also glad that the kids were thought of this time. Tough situation.

Interesting. My kid stopped because of their schedule but felt constantly pressured by her to join band again. It felt like flattery at first and then felt overwhelming at other points. Agree. Difficult spot.
