I’m not sure that’s accurate. I had a designer I worked with several years back who helped do exactly that. I paid her hourly for about 10 hours of work and she did a basic layout and then helped me source items from random places including vintage, and even spray painted a lamp base for me bc we couldn’t find the right color match in person. Unfortunately she’s moved on. Room lift and space joy offer design services that might work. And there seem to be a number of smaller designers looking for projects across instagram etc. |
Op, how much would you be willing to pay for design services vs. total furniture budget? |
| Reddit interior design channel has a sub for services. Filled with exactly this type of service |
|
I just checked out ID reddit and there are tons of designers who take small jobs and post links to their portfolios.
Not sure who the posters are above who claim ‘it can’t be done for less then 30k to 50k!’ Some of you are so ridiculous. Its one room that is already partially furnished. |
Well this is what your typical interior designer with a good business will want for a minimum budget. 10k is a very low budget considering a for the trade couch is at least 5k. Of OP’s budget is 10k she needs to go through a big box store since that’s what her budget affords. |
| People keep saying “big box store” but it doesn’t make sense if OP just doesn’t want any new furniture. All new furniture isn’t “big box stores.” |
It is if you only have $10k to spend. |
Op here. Not sure I follow. My budget isn’t 10k flat, I was just tossing that number out there. It’s a bit strange to see the insistence that I must buy big box when I’ve said many times I don’t want it. And I don’t have to have it. There are a number of online design services that offer room designs for 500 or less even, and I can buy whatever pieces I want, ideally something not big box as I’ve mentioned. I’m happy to do used/heritage fwiw. I have tons of quality furniture and art, I just need help putting it together, and I might swap my couch (I have a leather room and board couch but am sick of it). Are you a designer? If so, you should not be pushing throw away furniture. |
Op here. I’m confident I can get the items I need used/heritage/smaller stores for10k or less. I have a lot of furniture and art already, I just need to pull it all together and perhaps swap some things. It really doesn’t need to cost 20k, that’s silly. |
Op. There are tons of online services for under 1k a room |
Op here. Great tip, thanks!!! |
Room lift looks great |
| Get an architect. The glorified housewives of DMV calling themselves interior designers and upcharging you is a dying model. Check out @georginawilsonassociates and similar architect services on Instagram — for just a small flat fee they can redesign everything from your floor plan to your furniture and can lead you to the to the trade only items without the ridiculous upcharge passing the discount to you. No one should have to work with people with an associates degree and a certificate in design when there are excellent architects willing to work with you for far less from all over the world. Tech is the death knell of the uninspired, undereducated, overpriced local interior “designer” |
| No need to waste money on designer, recruit a couple of friend with good taste and economical sense to brainstorm in that room over coffee and pastries, you'll have fun and get plenty of ideas, even offers to go shopping together. |
I don't understand why you need a designer. Putting things together is not that hard if you already have nice stuff and 10k to spend on whatever is needed to pull the room together. Pick among your items the ones you must have in the room, search for rooms with similar items online, find those you like, and recreate the rest of the picture. |
