Does a 790 math SAT help in admissions for engineering majors?

+1 my DC who had 800 on math (and 780 on English) was rejected by MIT, CMU, even GA Tech and UIUC (also had 4.0 uwgpa, and 4.92 wgpa from a magnet program).

Got into state flagship with merit.

Granted, DC is a CS major.

The fact that a person can even ask this question without sarcasm is amazing- but this is where we are in this crazy TO world!

Eh. My humanities kid got 790 in math. It's just not that hard to do.

Because acceptance rates at those schools are Single digits and most STEM/Engineering majors have a 780+ Math.

But at anything outside the T25, yes a 790 MATH will help with STem/Engineering admissions. Doesn't guarantee anything, and having an 800 does not move the needle really either.

But it shows you are capable of being an engineering major.

Does 720 RW with 790 math will hurt one's chance for engineering at outside of the T25? Do they need 750+ RW score too?

No student - even one applying to MIT - will be rejected because they scored a 790 on the math portion of the SAT. There are a million other reasons an applicant to a top engineering program might be rejected, but it won't be the 790. It's good enough. That's one question wrong and could happen to anyone, even Einstein. Work on the rest of the application. And be mindful that acceptance to a good engineering program is in the single digits everywhere, even the publics. The grades in the most rigorous course load available at the high school - particularly the highest level math classes - are going to matter more.

Free Ride at UMD. Can't really complain from the person paying the bills perspective.

Considering a 790 is 99th percentile, it must be hard to do.

DS ‘23 had the identical scores and wasn’t admitted to Brown or Cornell (or any T20 to which he applied) as a liberal arts major.

Everyone is getting 790's these days. Not really helpful.

Why? those schools all have single digit acceptance rates. The people applying at MIT and the others for STEM all have 780+ Math scores, at least 95%+ of applicants do. It's not a magic ticket if 95% of applicants have the same thing.

Simple math, not that difficult to understand

Not at most schools outside T25. But it will depend. Look at CDS for each school you are considering. Mainly, you need to get to a school with 25%+ acceptance rates and then it wont hurt you typcially

Identical results at those schools with a 780 math, 770 English, same grades. Accepted at all targets and safeties. Attending UMD CS (in state) with merit.

I think applying ED to Cornell with those scores might have helped. I know a 1480 SAT score, girl who got into Cornell engineering during ED.
