Odd observations while researching travel

People everywhere complain about outsiders, doesn't matter if they're tourists or people who moved there from somewhere else.

It's possible to hate tourists but like their money.

We live in Manhattan.
Tourists are everywhere, but one really complains in an active way about them.

The only very minor gripes are that the tourists have no sense of urgency going in or out of the subway (if it’s 7:30 AM and you aren’t running down the escalator stairs to the platform then please stand to the right!) or moseying 4 abreast on the sidewalk during rush hour. That said, we’ll take a gawking tourist any day over some of the certifiably crazy behaviors exhibited by city dwellers! And mostly we just complain about stuff like real estate, the subway/busses being lousy, and how city services should be better.

In fact it felt “blah” during Covid with no tourists. So come visit NYC! We don’t care about the tourists — we are too busy working to afford out insane rent and being annoyed by lots of other things

Then add to that how short term rentals are increasing property rates. So many housing units are being converted from single family housing to short term vacation rentals. Young locals are getting completely priced out of being able to live in our town.

Everyone "poor" gets priced out of the "best" places. Capitalism takes care of that.

Beaches are popular everywhere. Do you think "got there first" is more naturally noble than "can pay the going rate"?

This we-are-bringing-money-to-your-community!!!! perspective is privileged and myopic and ignorant.

Feel like you don't understand how the economy works . . .

We like the tourists! Also, we like complaining about them!

There was a recent thread on this OP. I think it started with the OP talking about the situation in Spain. I think some people have minor gripes like tourists are slow, etc. Others bring up important points like impact on housing and environment.

Well, I’ve literally supervised economists so I think I have the basic gist of it.
