| CT. Buy my parents' house. |
| Upstate NY, but it’s true the taxes are no joke. But high taxes on a house of $300k is still less than low taxes on a house of $1.5m. |
Did you check the schools there? |
| OP, what factors do you think make schools "good" in your opinion? |
+1 |
you won't find anything in that price range. |
| What kind of weather and nature do you prefer? I think Michigan and Ohio are highly underrated-some nice neighborhoods with good schools and reasonable prices.TN and NH also underrated and no income tax. |
| I don’t know the house prices…but Carmel, Indiana was profiled in the WSJ. Excellent schools…and I believe you can find homes at different price points. |
That’s not true…have a relative in Rochester,NY that pays $15k+ in taxes on a $300k house…while in DC the taxes are only like $12k on a $1.5MM house. |

+1. Property taxes in upstate NY are very high. Most suburban schools are very good though all across the state. Avoid city school districts. Much better than Fairfax County, but your property taxes will be high. |
Recognize that the Great Schools rating that Redfin uses is per-state. That is, an 8/10 in a low performing state is not the same as an 8/10 in a high performing state. I agree that you generally want to look north, and you will be trading house price for taxes and weather (snow has costs in utilities, car, etc). Good schools aren't cheap anywhere. |
DP. Yea but you’re not going to get a house for 500k in those areas. |
| The area between Dayton and Cincinnati. |
