Humble brag or

poster being accused of humble bragging about a freshman’s mile time for soccer tryouts - absolutely brutal post - the sensitive DCUM snowflakes must be hitting the zinfandel early tonite!

Was it 4 laps around the track? Or was it a dirt path? 4:30 for a mile is a really, really fast time for a kid who never did track or cross-country running in basketball shoes against non-track athletes. He should really reach out to the cross country coach.

he said it was a little over 4 laps - coach called it a “true mile” - thought that would be 4 laps, not sure why they went longer

4 laps = 1600 meters = .99 of a mile. Sounds like the coach added on a little bit to make it exactly a mile.

4:40 in basketball sneakers with no training is a very good time for a freshman. Maybe he could join a local AAU track club, or run a 5K to see where he stacks up? Does he have good stamina to be able to sustain that pace for more than a mile?

A 4:40 mile for anyone is absolutely cookin' around the track

well he’s showing interest and ran a 5k with dad this weekend - he decided last to run the race last minute - and did very well - i think he’s leaning x country at this point - thank you all

and no the 5k wasn’t in basketball shoes! he wore hokkas!

i think cross country is the most common sport that kids can do for the first time when they’re 15 and become D1 recruit by junior year - everything else is just travel travel travel / private coach / repeat - from 3rd grade on. Nice to see these stories -

How short is he

5’11, maybe 6 at this point - slender frame. Very athletic compared to my other 2 kids, who had success at sports due primarily to grit. this one was riding a bike with no training wheels at 18 months. That’s why I struggle a bit, almost feels like he’s wasting athleticism if he switches to running.

is the implication here that runners are short? weirdly phrased question

at CBA in NJ (arguably the top cross country program in the country), apparently they run the mile in gym class at beginning of frosh year - anyone under 5 (which is extremely rare), are basically told they are doing cross country lol

If it’s our HS - you can win every training run, beep test, etc and it carries no weight. The teams are made before the kids even show up. You can play at the highest level—and watch kids that don’t play make the te because of who they know.

It’s high school. For soccer, it carries zero weight. If he wants to play in college, he should be doing mlsnext instead …and high school track on the side.

OP here - yes you are spot on - it appears that DC making varsity team was predetermined by the coach - but doubt he would play much as a frosh. His 17 minute 5k may have pushed him toward x country, he basically has to decide by this weekend. Just worried he may choose x country based on the attention he’s getting from coaches. But we are not crazy soccer parents so mlsnext was never considered

How is running a waste of athleticism? What a bizarre statement.
