I'm kind of surprised nobody's insulted Maryland yet.

Maryland is called one of these: "The Old Line State" or "The Free State." For this area it is part of the Wash. Metropolitan area. Unless you know this area, I would think 'Suburban Maryland" could be confusing.

OP said she is writing a proposal - you want her to write "DC, Northern Virginia, and the Old Line State?"

Native here - Southern Maryland is WRONG - refers to Charles, Calvert & St. Mary's Counties. Suburban Maryland is the correct term for Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.

Some are trying to get the whole region known as the "DMV." District, MD, VA.

Her question was, "What is Maryland Called" and I gave her the names. I know this isn't what she is looking for so she got some free infomation. I don't think "Suburban Maryland" really telll you anything and I would specifically The Wash., D.C.Metro area comprised of No. Virginia and suburban metropolitan areas in Maryland. Long, I know.
But to someone unfamiliar with this area Suburban Maryland areas could be anyplace.

I would say the "Washington Metropolitan area consisting of N Va, DC, and suburban MD."

Isn't No. Va., also considered suburban?

Why not refer to the whole area as the DC Metro area? You can even say DC Metro Area includes part of Virgina and Maryland.

I would say DC, Northern Va, and the Lax State.

I just called it DC and the metro area.
