Abusing any living thing is abhorrent. We're talking about dressage horses and the sport. 99.9% are not abused. Ever. It's a better rate than human children.
Dressage is really incredible. Humans don't "naturally" do dancing (ballet, break, jazz, whatever) or back handsprings, but to train a horse to respond to their rider and be able to use their body in these precise movements is really phenomenal. Consummate human/animal connection. I'll just have to be happy with my doggie by my side on the couch.

Why don't we put sheep herding with border collies in the Olympics then. Or sniffer dog obstacle courses, given the consummate human/dog connection in that job. Or falconry?

Dressage is going through some things right now but they can get back on track, drop the rollkur, and remember what lightness and self-carriage is.

It's not my favorite equestrian sport but anyone can see the good among the bad. While dressage finds itself, I hope they are able to listen to the voices of the horsemen and horsewomen and not the extremists who want to ban the double bridle, dressage whip and sour, or horseback riding altogether.

I think they’re doomed because while the Charlotte D video is bad, I don’t see how anyone can make a consistent and logical case that a few hits from a lunge whip are unacceptable abuse but riding itself is okay and so are bits, trailering, etc etc etc.
