Wouldn’t bother me. Like you said, everyone can see the hierarchy.

Sounds like you already have a low opinion of her. But I wouldn’t take this as a positive or negative on its own.

This is also how I refer to the people I report to, when there’s a reason to.

Same experience with women managers I had.

But the only male manager I had wanted to be referred as “manager”.

Your boss has an unchecked ego. Id start planning an exit from the position - maybe a lateral move if you like the company. I’ve had bosses like this and while they didn’t use the exact words “my direct report” it was a lot of “me”, “my” and “I” statements. Like “I need you to perform for me ” and “my sales team” and “my mid Atlantic guy”. It’s always indicative of someone that’s only in it for themselves and sees everyone else as a tool for them to achieve their personal ambitions. Get away from these people.

1. A support/servant leader doesn't act like that.
2. Why not talk about what the direct report DOES instead of how they relate to you? Sounds insecure.

OP here, this is what I did when I managed staff.

How about just their name and title?

Who they report to is somewhat unimportant at first blush.
