How often do you DNF?

Reading/listening to an audiobook is supposed to be something I enjoy doing. When I'm choosing to watch TV over that all the time, I need to move on. I like having a book I'm reading, a book I'm listening to, and at least one TV show that I'm watching at all times. I will also DNF a show if I find that I'm choosing to never watch it. There is enough out there that is so good that I don't have time for things I don't like!

How do you balance the internet? Serious question. The quick dopamine hits are so hard to resist even with a good book.

Op again. I stopped reading A Little Life. I did 80 pages and just dreaded picking it up. As another poster said, reading is supposed to be fun, why waste my time? No more 700 page books for me. If it was 300-400 pages, I would have finished it. I’m glad I finished Wrong place wrong time though.

I can't give a specific percentage or number of pages, but I feel free to stop reading anything, at any time. One author just annoyed me -- not the plotting, but the word choices and the characterizations, and I was out after reading 20 pages.

Are you glad you finished because you ended up liking the book or because you got a check mark for finishing?

I didn’t mean this is a snarky way but in an understanding your motivations kind of way.

I'll admit I DNF the less I invested in. A physical book I bought? I'll stubbornly finish. Long wait at the library? More likely to finish. I'm more likely to finish a physical book than an ebook. I'm least likely to finish a book I got off Libby with no waiting time. If I have something else on my kindle or can access Libby to get something else, more likely to DNF.

I think that's okay, I feel better about moving on to something else if I'm not enjoying it.

All the time. But I'm not in a book club. That's why, and that's why I'm not in a book club. If the characters are too insufferable, I just don't care. Don't care what happens to them. I have to stop reading or I feel they have just wasted too much of my time.

Both! I wanted to finish my commitment, but once I started skimming I started liking it more because I was able to skip the fluff.

Do you mean how do I read a book or listen to an audiobook instead of being on DCUM, for example?

When I read I try to turn my phone alerts off (this works well since I generally read right before bed) so I put my phone down and read instead. I have a Kindle so it’s a different device (sometimes I’ll read an actual physical book but that’s rarer). I think it would be a lot harder to read on my phone.

I like disappearing into a book so I’m generally pretty invested once I start reading.
