It's unavailable in DC groceries that are not Whole Foods or Wegmans.

Absolutely not true. Talk to your fishmonger. Only not available at places like Trader Joes and Aldi

Giant in Cathedral Heights does not have anyone staffing the fish counter and no whole fish available in the cases and Social Safeway has no fish counter. Only refrigerated and frozen cases.

DP. I grew up in a small town in a landlocked flyover state, without access to fresh fish. We ate canned tuna and frozen fish sticks at home and shrimp cocktail at catered events. I grew up knowing nothing about seafood. I have no idea what to do with a whole fish.

Jewish gal from Long Island here (a shore town), and I’ve never eaten whole fish except when served it in Greece (it WAS delicious, but they also deboned and plated it tableside for you!).

“Fishmonger.” Yeah, and the independent butcher and the corner family-owned baker.

There are precious few “fishmongers” nowadays.

Which Wegmans did you find this at?

None are cheap but I can think of 4 local fish shops within driving distance of my Bethesda house - Pescadeli, Black Salt, The Fishery in CCDC and River Falls Market in Potomac. Also the Whole Foods in Friendship Heights and on River Rd both have fishmongers who have been helpful every time I have a request.

Usually anything with bones is tasty than without bones. Meats taste way better cooked with bones as well.

The one by Tenley, but I've seen it at the ones in Virginia too.

H-Mart has LIVE fish that they'll kill and clean for you. That's the next step.

Or go to Wegmans.

Doing a quick spin through the online ordering (which is usually more expensive) they're showing that at Tenley Wegman's they currently have:

- whole rose snapper: $11.24 each (average size 0.75lbs)
- whole red snapper: $16.99/lb not sure the size
- whole yellow tail snapper: $13.99/lb, I bought two, it came to $33, so I'm guess about 1.25lbs per fish, more than enough for four of us
- whole black sea bass: $10.99/lb
- whole bronzini: $16.99/lb

If you're talking price, that is much cheaper than the fresh filets they have and, I think, cheaper than the frozen filets. They also had a chalkboard listing where the fish came from—sea bass was Ocean City. I've gone out fishing on charters there and caught great black sea bass, so I believe it (of course I paid someone to clean and filet it).

I would imagine the selection changes seasonally, and the bones were honestly not that big of a hassle. I'm curious about how to use any of these in a stew where bones might be more of a challenge.

I eat it but don’t make it, and no bones are in gefilte fish anyone serves. I also eat whitefish and tuna salads and those have no bones when served, too.
