Also always photograph the beginning and end of the rental.

When you rent the car and leave the rental site, they have a scanner that the car goes through do record all the dents and dings. When you return the car, they do the same and then if dings are found, you may be charged for scratches and dings that you can't even see. Bottom line - they're starting to charge for what many would consider normal wear and tear on a car.

Beware.

Sounds like a great way to lose all your customers.

Yes, if this is happening I’m going to switch from Hertz. I don’t need this nonsense.

Along with the before and after pics, make sure the after pics include dashboard with overall miles on car as well as fuel level.

What car rental company was this from??
To save me a possible headache on my next rental…..

Hertz sued me for damage to a rental that wasn't even the car I rented. Fight it until they give up.

You're lucky hertz didnt have you arrested for auto theft, that's been happening to innocent car renters there.

Someone once tried to scam us like this. It was complicated by the fact that it was a one-way rental, so we were returning it to a different facility than we'd rented it from.

What the guy who was trying to scam us didn't realize is that we'd just been through a huge ordeal, getting into a car accident while on vacation, an ER visit with our 2 yr old who'd been in the car, having the insurance company deem our car totaled, etc. So we were done being polite and accepting of horrible news, and fought that guy all the way to the corporate division of the company, where we not only were no longer charged for the "damage" (imperceptible "scratches" on the trunk) but also received $100 off a future rental.

You just have to hold firm and not take no for an answer. If they have no proof of the you causing the damage, they can't charge you for it.
