Is There Any Hope for a Rising Freshman Interested in Volleyball?

Here is an idea:

This is a great, low key, camp with female coaches. I sent my 100% beginner daughter and my club playing son last year and both had a great time. My son is going back this year with a friend who just plays for fun.

From now until tryouts, she should focus on getting as many touches on the ball as she can. If the high school team she’s trying out for isn’t all that great, that coach is going to look for athletic kids with good, willing to learn, attitudes.

Check out Olney Grass Volleyball on Facebook for an idea for some low key playing time. My husband and I have been setting up nets for years almost every Wednesday during the summer. We have a bunch of nets, so when we get true beginners, we can set up another net so those players can practice hitting, serving, etc.

Here is an option that I just learned about: https://teamaballc.com/sports-camps-and-clinics/

The website is a complete mess, with two prices listed ($225, $235), and you figure out that the cost is $275 when you check out. However, it is not too bad for 9.5 hours of volleyball babysitting. I cannot say anything about the camp / coaching quality, but they have a plan that looks good.

My kid played 9th grade. Excellent athlete with no real VB experience. The "tryouts" were a bit of a joke, it mostly seemed designed to scare tire kickers away. And there were MANY. It was a rough first day of PE class, lot of running, burpees, squats, all kinds of stuff they never did once during the season after tryouts.. But it whittled down the crowd probably 50% voluntarily on day 2.

Those that made the freshman team (it seemed to me) were the tall ones, the very few with VB exp, (but not JV/Varsity talent), and the athletes who were unfazed by the gym class stuff.

So, my suggestion is either be tall, have some experience, or be a serious athlete from another sport and dominate the try out hoo-ha.

If you are thinking you can roll off the couch and get on the team without one or both of fitness and skill(experience) good luck. Unless you're 5'9"+, then you might be a lock if you just survive day 1.
