Best free way to teach myself statistics?

Khan academy or a "statistics for dummies" book could be helpful. If you want to get more into it, a community college course.

How should I approach this? Library books? Khan academy? Free online courses (there seem to be some?)

Would appreciate any suggestions

Do you need ot understand the models and such? What do you need to do with the papers you read?

Usually the people who write those papers don't understand. They just print what the computer spits out

Just assume the paper's conclusion is true and move on.

Agree - Kahn academy, edX, coursera, “stats for dummies” are all great suggestions

I would watch youtube videos on whatever you come across and want to understand. It will be fresher, in smaller bites, and more helpful than a course.
