Submit to Auto Insurance or not?

Maybe debris from the truck took out your mirror (I am kind of curious how that can happen) so it is like glass damage from a stone which is covered by the comprehensive part of your insurance and usually doesn’t affect your rates. Or maybe your insurance thinks that you actually clipped another vehicle with your mirror and file it under at fault accident.

OP again - good points. I had a witness - my tween child, but I'm not sure insurance would accept that. I tried to get a pic of the truck that kicked it up, but prioritized driving safety. It was definitely shredded tire that the F150 drove over and kicked back. I'm glad it was just the mirror and not the windshield.

Adding here you can see an approximation of what happened at the end of myth busters s5 ep 12 (minus the decapitation).

I don’t understand why you did not flag down the truck and had them pull over? Both insurances would have covered it. Your premium most likely would not go up because it was their fault.

1. Alone w/a child
2. In an unfamiliar city in the South
3. Not chasing a stranger at 85 mph for mirror damage for which
4. There is no dashcam footage

The accident is your fault if Geico . They take it if it is flying debris you should have avoided it.

However in Geico if it was kicked out under vehicle and on ground not your fault.

Depends insurance company

You should have went to junk yard got a mirror

Depends on insurance. Geico if you notify then and no claim still screws your insurance. Progressive only counts if a claim .

Exactly this. Once they know they know.

Update: I claimed it and asked my adjuster about if my rates will go up just b/c I called, and she said no. She also said b/c it was road debris, my premiums will not go up. She was really great and by the time I got off the phone with her, the tow truck had been dispatched (it's illegal to drive a car w/o a driver's side mirror in DC, so it's inoperable) and I had a rental car ordered. Car is now at the dealer and I have a rental car. Really great service overall. I'm glad I claimed it (as of now).
