DP who also lives in Phoenix Not sure where you got those temps from but it's BS. It's 107 right now in mid June. August is 110+. My pool is currently 90 and won't go below that until September.

OMG, don't go to Arizona in August. LA will be hot enough. I was in AZ in June and it was over 100 every day. It does not cool off at night! Everything interesting I'd outdoors and you won't be able to enjoy it!

Phoenix poster again - August is miserably hot so it never makes sense why the kids have to go back to school so early. June is the best bet if you have to come in summer because the mornings, at least in the first half of the month, might be tolerable. But after then, no relief until September when the nights start cooling off again.

Sorry -- Tusconan posting and 120 seemed too high to me for August (really don't think it ever gets to 120!) so I pulled the averages offline. I guess this is why we always say Tucson is so much better than Phoenix! Does it really not cool down overnight? Tucson summer nights are fabulous -- feels like velvet on your skin, and the mornings are usually tolerable for a couple of hours. But I take your point that it is very hot. For August, if you really want to see Arizona, the Canyon and other places with high elevation are your best bet (and hope for no fires).

I usually think 100-110 for June, 105-115 for July, and back to 100-110 for August, then into the 90s for September.

Anyway, OP might want to think about Santa Barbara down to San Diego for August.

When it's in the 100s it will get down to the 90s overnight, not a big difference. And does it really matter if its 112 or 120? I mean, it's not like one is pleasant and the other starts to feel hot. Summer is hot. Temps are well above 100 for a lot of it and it doesn't cool off appreciably at night. Nobody would vacation here for fun in the summer unless they had to.

Exactly. It's not complicated! The average is 98 over the entire month, including night time. The average high is 108, and the max high in August 2023 was 117.

Exactly, the average high is the key data point. The daily low is only for a brief hour or two in the morning before the sun comes up. As soon as the sun comes up it's rapidly heating up until it peaks. So, no, I don't recommend visiting Phoenix in August for a fun family trip.

Nobody would vacation here for fun in the summer unless they had to.

No it really doesn't. You are not going to go golf, hike, run, swim, etc if its only 110 instead of 120. I have to watch a kid swim, while I'm in the shade, several days a week for 45 minutes. We're outside, in the shade, and it's unbearable. Its been about 110 for 2 weeks.
