CLT/Charlotte has got to be the absolute worst airport I have ever experienced

This. If I can, I avoid a layover at CLT! I love to walk, but too many missed/barely made connections.

NP. Newark is the absolute worst.

DFW and IAH have similar issues. One can get lucky with an adjacent gate, but much of the time it is a long walk and sometimes also a tram ride between terminals…

Don't you think the construction will help?

No, because I have zero faith that airport leadership is remotely competent. It's all window dressing. Same with the city itself. They're utterly obsessed with being "world class" but they do nothing to address the underlying issues, just throw up some shiney new building and proclaim "look at how cool we are!"

This thread was made for me - I hate CLT so much. In recent years it has gotten so much worse after US Air was absorbed by American and now it is a hub for layovers - hence the crowds. Didn't used to be so bad.

And totally disagree that DFW is comparable. So much better. Easy trains.

Surely, JFK is the worst? Followed by Atlanta.

It used to be just be a lot of walking, but now it is also ridiculously crowded. Someone said the terminal was built for smaller planes than those in use today. At the end of the American terminal, you can't even walk through the crowd if several planes are boarding at once. It's like walking through Times Square on a holiday, if everyone is carrying luggage.

I do my best to avoid CLT, but we had no choice over the holidays, and it reminded me why I will do just about anything to avoid it.

CLT it is one of the busiest airports in the US. Good news is all of the construction should make it easier to navigate, and should be done by 2025. either way, I avoid it if I were you.

Yes. Many times. CLT is much worse than SeaTac.

I always think about how many medical emergencies they must have from people who are out of shape trying to run from end to end with luggage.

It's #10. Miami, JFK which were mentioned, are busier:

I think Charlotte's issue is they grew too fast. There's really only one other airport in the Southeast region -- Atlanta (#1 in the US, and #1 worldwide), and the Southeast in general has seen a lot of population growth. Miami is too far south to really be considered part of that region.

Charlotte's issue is you need to walk between its 5 terminals/piers. Atlanta has more terminals but also a train to take you between each in 1-2 minutes. Much better design.

What we basically need is another major airport in the region, but geographically, there aren't any good candidates that are nearby and can take on that capacity.

I was coming to say, this person has obviously never been to Miami!

+1. I'll take SeaTac all day over CLT. The NYC airports are my "home" airports so while not great, I think I'm too biased to accurately assess. I agree with Miami as a total shitshow and also hate Atlanta and Denver.

CLT's issue is that it was decided that CLT would be the AA hub for nearly every flight to the Caribbean/Cancun before the airport could handle such traffic. Dunno if the construction there will solve anything but it doesn't sound like it.
