Do kids still chase and catch lightning bugs?

Still? I was born in '76 and never did this.

Three things I rarely see anymore are lightning bugs, butterflies, and stars. Strange times we are living in. I am 46, and all three were very common sightings when I was a child.

Just saw some taking the trash out, but the kids are headed to bed.

Fireflies lay their eggs in damp soil under leaf litter. When you were growing up did people bag and eradicate every leaf that fell? They sure seem to now. Also spraying for mosquitos kills everything. We still get fireflies but most of our neighbors don't.

I was outside a couple of nights ago with my kids and some of their friends. I caught a firefly and the friend reacted like I performed witchcraft 🤣. They had obviously never caught fireflies before.

Yes, here in Takoma Park - every summer.

That was my whole childhood. I used to catch bugs in jars and make terrariums. I used to catch spiders and bring them in the house. Mom thought I was craxy

We moved her 40 years ago, lots of them. Now I can't remember seeing one in years.

DS and the neighborhood kids were all running around our yard tonight trying to catch them!

Just saw some tonight in my yard in Potomac! My kids are long grown but I've seen the neighbor's kids catching them recently.

When you spray to kill mosquitoes, you kill fireflies. It’s not surprising that silver spring and Tacoma park are seeing them but Fairfax is not.

Yes, we have them in Kensington in MoCo.

My 9yo caught 5 or 6 yesterday in DC proper in our tiny front yard. Fireflies are out and about at dusk, and kids definitely still enjoy catching them.

This! We get many in our yard but the immaculate yards do not. We also get more birds and butterflies.
