My mistake! Eat, pray, love |
| The Ponds of Kalambayi by Mike Tidwell, about his peace corps stint in (former) Zaire. |
Heartily agree with both of these, except the Paul Theroux "Deep South". Not so good. |
An almost magical human being. I was a student of his, and have a tattoo in memory of him. |
| Shadow of the Silk Road, by Colin Thubron |
| Also an oldie, and not exactly travel books but James Michener's books are great too |

The "memoir" 3 cups of tea
(But it was later proven to be bullshit) |
I love this. |
Theroux is good until he isn't. As he's gotten older he's turned into kind of an elderly crank. Sometimes a fun one, not always. |
All of Colin Thubron's books are great—I saw him described as "the last gentleman traveller" and I thought, damn, I picked the wrong job. The first book of his I read, and the one I think that made him famous was Among the Russians. Early 1980s, driving through the USSR with KGB following him desperately trying to figure out what he was up to with all that scenery enjoying. |
