I DIY all of my painting. It is easy.

I love to paint, I did all of my walls but i didn’t fool myself into thinking it was easy or they looked professional.

I also did my niece’s room but they hired a professional painter years later to redecorate. He told them he hoped they didn’t pay someone for the previous job.

Ask for a detailed estimate next time but I don’t think that was unreasonable.

Every DIY paint job I have seen looks exactly like a DIY paint job.

Everyone who did it also hired a pro within two to three years to redo because they couldn’t live with their own mistakes.

You can't be serious. My cut ins are straight as an arrow, buddy. It just takes some practice to find a technique that works for you. And yeah, a little finess and confidence helps as well. Most pros don't pay attention to detail and are borderline sloppy.

a professional painter should ALWAYS prep/sand the wall. That's ridiculous

You are one in a thousand. Most DIY paint jobs are terrible. The homeowners know it and only admit years later when a pro fixes it.

The secret is real people rarely stare at paint jobs and the only one who feels bad is the amateur who didn't get it as perfect as the new build sprayed on early coats.

Like others have said you're paying for the job, not hourly. Your mistake was not including prep in the quote--it's going to look bad if there are any holes that need to be sanded etc. That said, does the 12 hours include the time to buy the paint, transit to your house, were there multiple people working with him etc

My painter charged 10K for a 2800 sf interior and sent a detailed scope of work contract so I knew exactly what they were doing down to the prep and the brands. It took about 24 hours and we had 2-5 workers in and out at times.

Your job sounds pretty on par if it was well done. How many workers were there?

Are they certified, licensed, and insured?

Never hire a contractor that isn’t all of the above.

Certified licensed and insured? Certified in what? Making shit up on the internet?

*never* hire a painter who isn’t certified, licensed, insured? Wtf? I would imagine the number of times people check the insurance status of any painter can be counted on one hand - let alone whatever certification you value.

+1 I’m an excellent DIY painter. As good as a lower level pro. There’s nothing easy about painting well. The prep work is a PITA, and it takes forever to do it right. I have moderate OCD, so I have to do some areas over a few times. I can do a perfect edge with no tape, but it’s definitely worth it to me to hire a pro when I’m not looking for an outlet.

lol you really do not know things work do you?

One guy working alone. It took two days, starting each day with paint purchase at 9am and wrapping up around 4pm. I’m just an idiot that’s all.

In my defense, I’ve hired him twice before and he generally does good work but in the past his pricing was fairer. This time we agreed on the job in a hurry and I kind of just took his bid at face value and didn’t discuss details and I really regret it now.

The price doesn’t seem that outrageous to me for the amount of area he was hired to paint but I find it totally unacceptable and unprofessional that he didn’t sand and fill in holes before painting. It’s not going to look as good or last as long that way since he didn’t do the prep.
