Why do people eat on the phone

Because they aren't chomping in my ear.

I prefer that to when my sister calls me and then spends half the call yelling at her dog.

My #2 phone pet peeve.

#1 is when the person on the other end starts talking to someone else in the room without saying something like “hold on a minute.”

A friend of mine does both, often simultaneously. But at least she calls!

Stop grossing people out.

If you call me in the middle of my meal I will continue to eat. If you don't like it say goodbye and hang up. It's not that complicated.

Why don’t you simply finish your meal, and then call back? Or text and say, “I just sat down to lunch, can I call you back in 20 minutes?” It’s not that complicated.

Back in the day, if the phone rang during dinner, we didn’t answer it. People left a message on the machine and we called back. It’s basic civility.

Sounds like you are bothered by a whole lot in life. Again, if it bothers you, hang up.

OP knows this. But she doesn't have the balls to talk to the person directly. She finds it more effective to lecture total strangers on the internet.

NP. I’m a new poster. Genuinely, can you answer the question: when you are in the middle of a meal, why do you simply call the person back? Why would you not finish your meal before taking a call?

Why do you leap to answer your phone every time it rings? Chill. I don’t feel beholden to answer every phone call immediately. If I’m busy, I call someone back. Pretty simple.

Because it's not bothering me to eat and talk. You're the one bothered. I can do both at the same time just fine. I get to decide when I answer calls. Not you.

My best friend does this, because she's on her lunch break. Also she's a very picky eater, and I guess it's an unconscious way for her to not eat her food. I've seen her take calls while we're eating together. And sometimes she calls me when she's having lunch, and I know she's only eating on the margins, and then she'll think: "oops, time to go back to work, no time to finish!".

Sigh.

I hang up if someone is eating. I tell them they can call me back when they're done. I'm not listening to them chew in my ear. It's gross. Whatever they're calling me about really isn't that important to listen to them chew.

I also only answer the phone when I feel like it. So if I don't want to talk I'm not answering.

Yes, really!!! There is eating and then there is chewing loudly with your mouth open. The second one would bother me in person or on the phone, the first I couldn't care less.

But what if you call them in the middle of their lunch or whatever?

It's right in your ear. Right. In. Your. Ear.
