Rest Stops

Does he care? I remember my little brother would wear one when we traveled long trips, I think he must’ve been about 6 or 7. Never really gave it much thought but I’m sure there were probably times he used it instead of having to wait for a restroom.

Not sure what you mean. If my kid says they have to go, then I’m getting off at the next exit with a viable bathroom. I’d
never tell them to hold it longer than that.

I stop every hour to walk for 5 minutes. It's refreshing, keeps me energized, and prevents the tired feeling you can get from sitting in a car all day.

We take many road trips throughout the year. We stop every 4 hours during the day. When the kids are sleeping at night, we only stop to fill up on gas or when my husband or the kids, and I need to use the restroom.

How old are your kids? Mine could never go four hours without being miserable.

Why would anything other than this be the answer? What is with all of these anxious bathroom posts? Just stop and find a tree if necessary. No big deal. 60 seconds of time.

Squeeze.

I do admit to … I wouldn’t say dehydrating, but definitely not being generous with the liquids … when road tripping. We have a mandatory “you must try” rule at every rest stop for everyone. We usually can go 3 hours between stops, but if someone needs to go, we stop early and everyone goes.

Yes this. Below age 5, I’d stop within 10 minutes of someone saying they need to pee. Mine are now 7 and 10 and can go longer. They also understand that drinking a lot will make the ride more uncomfortable. We aim for about every 3 hours to stop, which is about my limit too.

What an abusive animal

I have 3 kids and I stop whenever someone says they need to go. I do urge the other ones to go if only one says they need to go but I would stop any time. It’s not healthy to be holding urine for hours.

I think if you want respect, give respect. If someone has to go, we stop. I do require everyone go then so maybe will reduce a stop an hour later, though.

But If my husband told me I had to hold it? I'd be upset, so why treat your kid like that.

Obviously sometimes it isn't ideal to stop and they have to wait, but we stop

Why make road trips unpleasant by forcing your kids to hold it?

We stop whenever anyone needs to. It’s usually my youngest son, but sometimes my DH or I need to stop.

We try to combine stops - so we gas up, so get snacks/food, etc.

Once we had kids, we just started adding an hour (or two for longer trips) for the drive time.

Neither of my children would pee on the side of the road unless it's an absolute emergency. Most people who are not under the age of 5 or 6 can hold their pee for 10-20 minutes until a good time/place to stop comes.

I don't want to use a disgusting Exxon bathroom in the middle of North Carolina when I know if we drive 10 more miles there will be a nicer option like a Sheetz or McDonalds.

But yes, once someone says they have to pee I'll ask if it's urgent and tell them we'll stop in 10 minutes or so. Then we do.
