Spin off from self-sufficient Kindergartener thread - does everyone pack a lunch?

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution.

School lunches are chock-full of sugar, salt, fat, and preservatives.

Pack a lunch.

I agree with most of the comments so far. I think we are going to start by packing lunches most days and maybe let our son pick one day a week to buy lunch. I know there are healthier choices on the menu (we are in Arlington), but if my 5 year old is left on his own to pick, he is going to pick junk 9 out of 10 times. Apple or chips - he will pick the chips!

We made a compromise so we could pack healthier, cheaper lunches while DC could have the fun of enjoying a cafeteria-cooked lunch if he wished. DC would look at each month's menu and choose one meal per week to buy.

21:32 here. You said your kid wait "on line." The only people I know who say that instead of "in line" are New Yorkers. Of course, I guess it could have been a typo.

I am from Utah and never given any thought to in line vs on line. I probably say both..

I don't think the lunches are healthy. I am not impressed by baked turkey nuggets. it is all highly processed crap with little fresh ingredients, and I don't want my kids eating it.

The principal of our school suggested that for Kindergarteners since there is so little time to eat that we pack their lunches. This way they don't have to wait in line for their food, rush to eat their food all in 30 minutes or less.
