Temple vs. Drexel

Drexel has an engineering bent and a co-op schedule and is $$$. It also has good autism support from what I hear. Drexel is in a safer area (it borders Penn).

My ears just perked up. Tell me more about their autism support as DS is on the spectrum. He is very independent but could use some help navigating friendships.

Love Pitt but tuition is just too high

Well, Drexel's tuition is sky-high. Maybe you are counting on merit aid?

Temple and Drexel are quite different. Temple's neighborhood is terrible. Drexel's is a bit better in that Drexel + Penn create a huge student population and their neighborhood seems to support that population.

But since your kid wants a city school, I'm guessing you already know about the neighborhoods.

Temple is a WONDERFUL university. They had 9 Fulbright scholars this year! It's big, diverse, and fun. Full of talented, scrappy kids. Philly employers love it.

Drexel is much more tied to engineering in most people's minds. The co-op program is extremely well-regarded. Their academic calendar is a little unconventional. And the fact that most kids do multiple co-ops means your friends/roommates are sometimes just gone for a semester. This works well for some kids, less well for others.

Hope this was helpful.

I am not as familiar with Philly neighborhoods as my DS Can you speak more about Temple? As much as I would love for him to stay in state, no way he will get into VTech or W&M. I don't mind paying out of state tuition but I do want for him to be safe.

Look at VCU for an urban school with engineering that's more forgiving test score wise.
I was not too keen on how they handled the recent protests, things turned violent at VCU.

For mine, Pitt with merit (engr) was cheaper than Drexel with FA and merit. Mine was a high flyer, so not sure how more avg stats would affect numbers at both schools.

Drexel would probably offer better outcomes than Temple, but my guess is that Temple would offer better aid. Drexel is getting a lot more high caliber candidates.

Have you considered WPI or UVM? Or LACs with engr might offer good merit -- York, Elizabethtown, Manhattan.

No firsthand experience but google Center for Autism at Drexel, or Neurodragons. It is additional $$$.

DS is really not into LACs. He wants to stay on the East Coast.

If you can’t afford 60-90k a year for college, I wouldn’t even look at Drexel.

We intend to use 529 funds and hopefully he will get some merit aid.

DC with 1220 SAT submitted scores OOS and got $14k merit annually for Temple's School of Engineering. Went elsewhere due to lower cost in-state.

Students walked out of the graduation peacefully. What violence are you referencing? Seems strange to discount VCU entirely when it seems the obvious in-state choice for your kid.

Temple = bad nabe

If you don’t like the “violent”
Vcu protests then you should stay very far away from temple and just a little far away from Drexel.
I live in the Philly burbs and grew up in west Philly. Temple is in a legit terrifyingly scary neighborhood. Home invasions kind of scary. Constant armed muggings kind of scary. I can’t even count the number of kids I know who have had something very bad happen.
My dd goes to Pitt, which isn’t exactly nice at all, and it’s like a gated country club compared to temple.

We visited Temple and honestly, the neighoborhood was a freaking nightmare. We got a bit lost and felt like we had entered the apocalypse.

A neighbor's kid went there and transferred to GMU after less than one year. She lived off campus and could no longer deal with the drug dealers and homeless people loitering on her front steps every night.

I work in DC (ALL over DC) and really it is nothing that you don't see in DC. If you venture into DC (or beyond upper NW) it really isn't all that shocking. I went on a tour to Temple last year with DS and his BFF's family (who live in Columbia Heights) and none of us entered the apocalypse (and yes, we drove around a bit.)

+1 I know several happy kids at VCU. I would definitely take a closer look rather than relying on one incident. It's the obvious choice for your requirements.
