Me! Did it when I was childless and still do it now my daughter has arrived. My nieces benefit from the money and attention and my sister benefits from the opportunity to get a break!

I get it. Have a friend who was the rich uncle to his rather deadbeat sis and her kids. Now nieces are grown and rather than trying to follow in uncle's footsteps (he worked his way through school and became a successful professional) they followed their mother's and just view him as a bank to backstop their bad choices.
