Middle ground seems to be Dillard's online.

Do we even have Dillards in this area? How would you return?

Mail it back like we did in olden times.

I know for a fact there are some in Ohio.

Lol, this is the best we've got. Get a dress from some department store in Ohio and mail it back if you don't like it.

There are people on here from all over the US. There are people who travel on business. There are people who find online ordering convenient, can afford to order $1,200 worth of dresses (that could be 3-12 depending on your budget), and take the time to drop off the returns and still be ahead on reduced inconvenience. I have a hell of a time finding stuff in malls so that is how I roll.

A bunch of people recommended Dillards before. It has stores in 27 states but not DC and north of there according to Wikipedia.
My mom lives near them in Ohio and finds occasion wear there. I think they are recommended by people who like fancy/conservative/church/Southern style. Many people also don't care where their online retailers are located at all. I consider it a valid suggestion.

So...if Dillard's doesn't work...try Macy's. They have lots of things online that you can't easily find in their stores because of business issues. Maybe look at Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren brands as similar to what Talbots might stock. Unless they only have summer stuff right now. I find fall is the best season to find plain colored items and conservative shapes.

I saw this same dress in Talbots recently and thought it was beautiful. I am planning to go back and try it on. Talbots leans toward frumpy but I have also been surprised there.

You might also look at Eliza J dresses or Maggy London. Both available at Nordstrom.

Linen shifts are hardly figure-flattering.

Why do the models stand like this? I mean, I'm not wondering how the dress would look if I was leaning back to avoid a bee. I'm wondering how it will look when I am standing normally.

They stand like that because this is the type of dress that will show anything in your belly, including your intestines. I think it's beautiful, but it's like spanx city, so I'd pass.

Talbots dresses are often quite flattering on average bodies. I would try it.

Lord and Taylor used to be good for dresses. Not sure where I’d go now.

Check out Hobbs London at bloomies. They carry this designer in the Tyson’s store.

I like both of these a lot. Some of hte other dresses posted look too young/trendy for me, definitely, but I'm 51.
I think Nordstrom's is likely your basic go-to for stuff like this. You can sort by different lengths, colors, neckline, etc. People have also posted a lot about The Fold -- they have some beautiful dresses, but I've never actually ordered from there. Neiman Marcus is also great for dresses, but it tends to run a little more expensive/formal than Nordstrom, which has more price points.

I don't love the Talbots dress, but I don't think it's awful. It's fine. People are harshing on it unnecessarily. It's the kind of dress you could wear to all of those occasions and no one would think "OMG, why is she wearing that dress." You would look perfectly fine and appropriate.

Here's one in a blue lace that might work:

Former model here. She is standing like that because 1) the dress will look like an ugly sack if she doesn’t, and 2) she knows her angles.

I like that talbots dress better than a lot of the items others have posted. It's pretty and classy.
